Hello USS Rentz Family,
The following is an official message from our USS Rentz Commanding Officer:
"On Friday, the Navy announced the decision to extend the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group (CSG) deployment to just under eight months in order to fill a gap in coverage created by delays in shipyard maintenance of another CVN.
What this means is that the Carrier Strike Group expects to return to San Diego in late March.
We deploy with a keen awareness that our schedule is always subject to change as naval forces are inherently flexible. Rumors of a potential extension have been running around the Strike Group for months and we have known that this was one of several options available to the decision makers in Washington, but this is the first official word to the force.
While the Navy's final decision is the best solution of many options, our leadership recognizes that adjusting carrier deployment schedules has a profound impact on our personnel. This will require even greater support for our families and loved ones that support us from home. We stand read to provide any assistance to you, the leaders of our family support structures, so that our Sailors can focus their efforts to safely accomplish the mission.
We are focused on the operational challenges that lay immediately before us as we continue on to the Indian Ocean and out likely participation in combat operations in Afghanistan. We will continue to pass along information on schedule specifics as they are solidified and made available to us."
