Before we moved here, we did enough research on our own to know that we would be looking for housing off base. As a married couple with no children we will more than likely be offered on base housing in a high rise tower, apartment style home. Not the type of home Tim and I were really looking to have for the next three years. I would hate more than anything to feel like we were living in barracks or a college dorm again.
Knowing that would be the only housing that we would be eligible for, the downfall is that the base will not allow any dogs in high rise units. Once we are offered on base housing and decline it for personal reasons (having a dog) then we are basically on our own to find off base housing for ourselves. With that being said, we decided to submit a form this morning that lets the base know we are declining on base housing upfront. That way our name isn't on a wait list when someone else that really needs on base housing is waiting behind us when we already know we don't want to live on base.
The next step for us is to spend a good amount of time in the Housing Office looking though binder after binder of available homes out in town. Once we have four or five homes that meet our criteria (two bedrooms, some yard for Zoe, at least one parking spot and not too far of a walk from a train station) we turn our picks into the Interpreters at the Housing Office and they will call the real estate agents out in town and schedule a showing for us. Keep your fingers crossed for us..the quicker we find a home, the quicker we are reunited with Zoe!
