The sun is out and shining, the bird are chirping...who would think that we have our very first Typhoon on the way? Yes typhoon season is well underway, normally during June-October. The base has their own system of letting us know how close the storm is to hitting, known as TCCOR levels. TCCOR 5 is 72 hours out, TCCOR 4 is 48 hours out, so on and so on. This morning they announced TCCOR 3, it is expected to hit tomorrow night at 9pm and the worst will be Wednesday morning. It is now just over the island of Okinawa and they are predicting 50-65 knot winds with 75 knot gusts for Yokosuka.
Typhoons are nothing more than a hurricane that rotates in the opposite direction. We experienced a few trail ends of hurricanes back on the east coast when we lived in Virginia so we are prepared with candles, flashlights, bottled water, radio, etc. Another wonderful thing about Japanese homes is that they all have storm shutters on all windows and glass doors, like our sliding door off of the dining room in the picture below. Yet another thing I have to wonder why don't all houses on the east coast back home have these shutters when instead people board up their homes with sheets of wood? Some families close them when they want to keep their homes cool in the summertime however the main reason they are on our homes is to be used during times like this, typhoon season!
