When Tim was in Dubai yesterday I briefly caught him on webcam. He told me not to be alarmed, but something had happened on the ship the night before and told me to keep an eye out for anything on the news or any update from our Ombudsman. Well tonight, the news came and it was difficult for all of us to take.
Saturday night Petty Officer 3rd class, David Mudge, 22, was working in an auxiliary machinery space, going about his every day job, when he was electrocuted. Medical responders onboard worked to resuscitate him until ambulance crews arrived. He was taken to Ceders Jebel Ali Hospital, UAE where he died an hour later. Tim could only say so much but he was visibly shaken up by the whole incident. He said Mudge was a good poker buddy of his.
This horrible accident puts into perspective that it could have been any one of our husbands/boyfriends. We often take for granted the fact that they are on a ship, and feel that they are farther away from danger than those soldiers that are on the frontlines. Today this was proven that it is not always the case. Anything can happen at anytime, war or no war...he was just doing his job, the one he woke up and did every day on the ship.
We keep his family in our prayers and hold our loved ones on the Rentz tonight just a little closer in our hearts. We are thankful that they are still with us because tonight we realize that we are one less come spring when the Rentz returns home.
